In the late 1970’s Chris Pask flew over the stony land west of Hastings and watched farmers struggle as one crop after another failed in the hot, arid terrain. "Grapes would do well there,” thought Chris, and he could not have been more correct! The barren land that housed the nearby rubbish dump is today the internationally recognised Gimblett Gravels region approximately 800 hectares in size.
The winery has gone from strength to strength producing intensely flavoured wines that have consistently earned both domestic and international acclaim. An amazing addition to the collection at the New Zealand Wine Centre, Napier.
Royal Easter Show 2010
An indication of the extent to which New Zealand winemakers have raised their quality bar has been the increase of top medal awards in the first day of judging at the 2010 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards in Auckland. The newly appointed chair of judges, Kate Radburnd comments:
'White wines from the 2009 vintage and reds from earlier vintages, mainly 2008, reflected the evident focus of the winemaking community on improving quality by lower yields in vineyards and continued honing of their winemaking technique. The gold medal wines are top class by the highest international standards.
'Ms Radburnd, who is the chief winemaker for CJ Pask Winery in Hawkes Bay, made history when she became the first woman to chair a major national wine competition in New Zealand.' Terry Dunleavy, Director

Cassis, blackcurrant, spices and leather make up the aromas of this wine. The strength of cabernet sauvignon is the main component, with flavours of blackcurrant and cassis, combined with the silky textured merlot and vibrant spicy malbec fruit.
